Die Tödliche Doris (Deadly Doris) was a German performance art and music group based in Berlin from 1980 to 1987. It was founded by band members Wolfgang Müller (1957–) and Nikolaus Utermöhlen (1958–1996) and later joined by Chris Dreier, Dagmar Dimitroff, Tabea Blumenschein and Käthe Kruse (1958–).
Die Tödliche Doris was part of the Geniale Dilettanten (Ingenious Dilettantes) movement, a merger of the New Wave and post-punk scene, which combined influences like Frieder Butzmann, Einstürzende Neubauten and Malaria!. The head of the band, author, musician and artist Wolfgang Müller, wrote the book Geniale Dilettanten (Ingenious Dilettantes) for the MERVE publishing house. This was known for the first German publisher of French postmodern philosophers.
Rather than constructing a consistent identity, typically essential for pop music groups, Die Tödliche Doris challenged the notion of "convention" or "stereotype". Instead, they tried with each music piece and production not to follow a "style" or "image". Inspired by the post-structuralism of Baudrillard, Foucault, Guattarri and Lyotard Die Tödliche Doris want to deConstruct ![sic] a sculpture, made by sounds. This musical, amusical or non-musical invisible sculpture should become the body of Doris itself.

Die Tödliche Doris (The Deadly er, Doris) were a bloody-mindedly brilliant 80’s German post-punk band/ performance art concern, part of the self-styled Geniale Dilletanten movement (along with Einstürzende Neubauten and Malaria!) if you will. As a seemingly central tenet, manipulation of expectations is the rule, extending most fantastically to their 1984 release “Chöre & Soli” which consists not of conventionally playable records but rather a set of 8 miniature colored plastic discs and dedicated player. The sound content is limited to mere seconds per side, as befits the original use of the devices: the internal voice boxes of “talking” dolls. Needless to say these things are now rare as hen’s teeth. Anyone have a spare ?

Die tödliche Doris was a 7 year long art project in the end 80ties. It consisted of a group of (usually 3) people( Wolfgang Müller, Nikolaus Utermöhlen und Chris Dreier/Dagmar Dimitroff/Tabea Blumenschein and then Käthe Kruse ) who did Multimedia art performances. Their work was concerned with the question of identity - especially in pop groups. They created their typical style the “ingenious dilletantism” and performed on Punk/NDW/Industrial festivals such as “Berlin Atonal”.

Doris as musician. That Doris is deadly is not at all so clear to herself. Because she actually loves all people. She went to a "humanistic" high school so to say, where she naturally also had music lessons. She likes music very much, as everything. Whether or not she controls one instrument or them all is no matter; she finds it amazing if people make music. Actually everybody should make a little bit of music. Doris sees herself not as a musician exactly; she would consider that to be a limitation. Luckily there are so many, who attend to the music-making on her behalf. Doris rather likes to sing, her favorite instruments are sirens.
