The Zalgo Chronicles

Zalgo is an Internet legend about an ominous entity believed to cause insanity, death and destruction of the world, similar to the creature Cthulhu created by H.P. Lovecraft in the 1920s. Zalgo is often associated with scrambled text on webpages and photos of people whose eyes and mouth have been covered in black. http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/zalgo

Initially created by regular Something Awful contributor Shmorky, Zalgo has taken on a horrifying life of its own. It lay dormant until a SomethingAwful goon, by the name of Bobby Deluxe, created edited versions of the webcomic Ctrl Alt Del and shared them in a megathread dedicated to morking the comic. It was further spread by b3ta.com users, who photoshopped IRL and web-based comics to feature eldritch horrors. It has since spread to 4chan and other large communities and has run rampant ever since.

I have never been so scared in my life. The attached picture is a screenshot of the documents I've found about Project Zalgo. Before you respond with questions, let me tell you that I don't know any of the important answers. I couldn't believe it either when I first read it. Save it, post it everywhere you can. print it up and put it on telephone poles. Email it to your friends. Frequently described as “Lovecraftian” or “Cthulhu-inspired,” Zalgo actually bears a closer similarity to Shub-Niggurath or Yog-Sothoth, the latter described by Lovecraft as resembling

"protoplasmic flesh that flowed blackly outward to join together and form that eldritch, hideous horror from outer space, that spawn of the blankness of primal time, that tentacled amorphous monster which was the lurker at the threshold, whose mask was as a congeries of iridescent globes, the noxious Yog-Sothoth, who froths as primal slime in nuclear chaos beyond the nethermost outposts of space and time!"

It is a manifestation of a terror that is based on insanity and chaos rather than ordinary mortal danger — comics, of course, being an apt target for this idea, as their innocence and relative shallowness make for an especially jarring juxtaposition.

Zalgo's coming is heralded by the fabric of reality itself snarling or screaming "He comes!" and the horrific mutation of web-comic characters and fonts. Gaping, toothy maws, stingers, and masses of tentacles are the norm. Invariably, the eyes turning to black slime and runn down their cheeks like tears of oil. Font scrambles and loses coherence.
